I have yellowjackets in my woodsiding what do you recommend
    A
If you can locate their entry point then it is an easy fix.  Early in the morning or late at night when the yellow jackets are not flying around and not active, you can apply Tempo Dust into the opening using a hand duster.  If you can locate the entry point, then this treatment will usually kill all of the yellow jackets within 24 hours.  Once there is no more activity, you want to be sure to close the opening with caulk or some other method so future yellow jackets do not try to use the same entry point.

    Q
What pesticide do I use to get rid of a hornet or yellow jacket nest?
The nest is behind the external wall of a house. I would like to drill a hole and apply a pesticide before I remove the wall to remove the nest. What pesticide should I use?
    A
Our most popular dust  for bees/wasp is Tempo Dust.  You will need a hand duster to apply it with.  It usually works within 24 to 48 hours. You want to go up to the opening where they are flying in and out of at dusk or at night when they are not active and puff twice directly into the hole.  Then pull the duster out and puff directly at the hole to cover the opening from about 5 inches away.  This is the most efficient and fastest way to eliminate a bee/yellow jacket/w

    Q
What do you suggest for ground nesting bees?
    A

If you know where the nest is you can use a dust such as Tempo dust puffed into the nest or holes using a hand duster and around the opening of the nest. This type of application usually will kill the nest of wasps over the course of a few days.

Ground bees, also known as digger bees, can be very difficult to control no matter what product you use and they most likely will come back to your property year after year unless you do your part to alter your property to make it unfavorable to the bees. Ground bees prefer dry soils with thin grasses so irrigating the area frequently and correcting any issue that causes your grass to be thin will help deter the bees from nesting. In areas where you do not have grass, a layer of mulch will help deter the bees from nesting. Ground bees are solitary bees and are not very aggressive and are known to be a beneficial insect which is why you will not find any products specifically labeled for this type of bee. Talstar P can help provide some level of control but it will not get rid of all of the ground bees on your property. You should use Talstar P at a 1 oz of product to 1 gallon of water for a 1,000 sq ft area ratio. This will give you the fastest knockdown and the longest lasting residual. Talstar P does not offer an instant knockdown but will kill insects that come into contact with treated areas over a short period of time.

    Q
How do you know when it's safe to plug a wall void after using Tempo 1% dust for yellow jackets?
I applied Tempo dust with a bulb duster to the exterior of my home where they were entering though a void in the siding. The next day I found 2 yellow jackets in my home that presumably entered through former curtain rod holes. 1 dead, the other dying. So, I applied Tempo dust inside my home to the only holes I could find which were old curtain rod anchor holes. I never heard any activity in the wall. If I don't see any more entering the exterior of my home, can I safely plug both sets of holes? I fear them just continuing to live in the walls. How do I know the gueen is dead? I have not found any dead yellow jackets on the exterior of my home. Where are they? Do I need to find and remove the nest?
    A

When treating for yellow jackets and using Tempo 1% Dust,  the yellow jacket colony will remain active for only one summer, after which the queens will move away to start up new colonies. The remaining yellow jackets will die at the end of the season, and the nest will not get reused. So during the meantime while they are active the Tempo 1% Dust that you have applied should kill the ones that are in the void that you have placed it in. That does not necessarily mean that there is a nest in that particular void. The nest could be elsewhere, and they could be foraging for food or these could just be the remaining yellow jackets that are left behind after the queens have left already.

    Q
Will Tempo Dust work on trees for yellow jackets?
I have a couple of crape myrtle trees outside my door but one of them has at least 25-50 yellow jackets on it/flying around it all day. I live on an acre wooded lot, thus not knowing where the nests are. Would the dust be effective or should I try something else?
    A
The dust will not harm the trees, but the yellow jackets will only be affected if they land on the dust that is applied on the tree.  Dust is typically meant to be applied in cracks and crevices and openings to the nest of the bees/yellow jackets/wasps.  When applied to a tree it will be exposed to the weather and can be washed away by rain or blown away by wind.  If yellow jackets is your main issue and you do not know where the nest is, we recommend our yellow jacket baiting system.  The yellow jackets will take a bait that you provide mixed with the insecticide, Onslaught in the kit, and take it back to the nest wherever it may be and spread the product around killing the nest.

    Q
Is Tempo dust good for puffing into wall voids for bed bugs? Also how does it kill? Do bugs ingest it?
I've done two complete treatments Suspend SC with Gentrol everywhere and Phantom aerosol between carpet and the baseboard. Thought it wouldn't hurt to drill holes in wallboard and puff into voids, too before doing another complete spray.
    A
Tempo dust is a great product for bed bug control and your plan of action would be advised because dust can last up to a year inside wall voids.  The Bed Bugs do not ingest the dust.  If you were to look at a dust product under a microscope, it would look like shards of glass.  When an insect, including bed bugs, walks over dust, the jagged edges cut the insects exoskeleton which results in the insect dehydrating and dying.  The exoskeleton of an insect holds in moisture and if compromised, the insect will die very quickly.

  • Asked by Diane from West Springfield, Ma

    Q
How should I get rid of an underground nest of yellow jackets that live under my deck?
I see yellow jackets coming and going in a three foot area from between one deck board, in my backyard, all day long. I ordered Tempo 1% dust and the bellows hand duster. Should I just pump the dust along the crack between that deck board where they enter and exit, or do I have to remove the board and find the nest? I greatly appreciate your assistance. Your product should be here in a couple of days.
    A
You can initially try just to apply the Tempo 1% dust between the cracks and see if it takes care of the problem. If the nest is larger or further away from the crack then you could be required to remove the board to directly treat the area.

Applied Tempo Dust for wasps about 3-4 weeks ago and now they have returned. Do we reapply?

Tempo 1% Dust will work great if the entry way to the nesting location is lightly dusted. It could be that there is another nesting area that needs dusted late in the evening when they are the least active.

I am mixing Tempo 1% dust with water to spray in a hose end sprayer. How much do I need to use?
    A
Tempo 1% Dust should NOT be mixed with water and applied through any spraying equipment. You should only dust cracks and crevices using a dust applicator such as the B&G Bulb Duster 1150. We do carry liquid concentrates that can be applied using a hose end sprayer.

    Q
I had cicada killers in my yard two years in a row. What is best to get rid of them?
Would Delta dust or Drione dust work. Other products?
    A
Tempo dust would be a good choice to help control the cicada killers. Tempo dust offers a pretty fast knockdown though you should note that it does not offer an instant knockdown. You could also use EcoExempt Jet Wasp and Hornet spray. It will kill on contact. Stand a safe distance from the nest. Hold canister in an upright position and aim actuator opening toward nest. Treat nest until wet. Contact as many wasps/hornets as possible. Best time to treat is in the evening or early morning when they tend to be in or around the nest. Repeat as necessary.

  • Asked by Harlan from Phoenix, Az

    Q
Which has better residual activity, Tempo dust or Delta dust?
Aside from the moisture resistance of Delta dust, which has longer residual life, Delta dust of Tempo dust? This will be going inside a new wall being built and may never get treated again, but at least will take care of whatever crawls in there now.
    A

Tempo Dust can remain effective up to 1 year if left undisturbed.  Delta Dust can remain effective up to 8 months.  If you want to apply a dust with the longest residual effectiveness Cimexa Dust can last up to 10 years if undisturbed.
