    Q
Is a 6" trench enough if you have a below ground level basement?
The instruction manual for termidor is a little confusing when the foundation of the house is below grade. They seem to suggest going 4ft deep with rods. Is a 6" trench enough protection if you have a basement?
    A
Yes, the trench should be 6" by 6" around the perimeter of that basement. With the rods, it is stating that it needs to be at least 4 ft below the ground.. That is if you are rodding.

    Q
    Texas Fire Ants and Chiggers
How effective is this product on fire ants in Texas; if so, for how long before spraying needs to be done again? Does it work well for chiggers too? Could I effectively use the Talstar P I bought from you for other pests also for chiggers and fire ants or is it better to buy this product two for these 2 pests?
    A

Termidor SC is not a good option for fire ant control because it can only be used on or immediately next to a structure. It is not labeled to be used in the lawn.

Talstar P (Talstar One) would be a good option for chiggers in the lawn. This can be broadcast across the yard.

For fire ants, we would recommend a bait, Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait. This can be broadcast across the lawn or applied to individual mounds.

    Q
Can Termidor be applied along concrete walk ways, patios, and drive ways that are paved against house walls?
    A
Termidor SC should only be applied a foot up and a foot out directly up against the structure for a topical barrier and in the soil (6" by 6" trench and/or drilled holes in concrete) for termite control/prevention. It cannot be applied as a broadcast or on walk ways, patios or inside the structure.

    Q
drilling every 10 to 12 inches in concrete doesnt this create a weak spot in your slab or a breaking point?
    A
The 10 -12 inches spacing is the required amount to ensure that the drilling will not cause weakness in the concrete slab. You do not want to drill any more than 1/2 inch wide.

    Q
When applying Termidor SC for ant control is it a good idea to dampen the soil prior to treatment?
or water it in after treatment?
    A
According to the label, you should not apply Termidor SC when precipitation is occuring or treat soil that is water-saturated or frozen. It is best to wait until you have a few days of no rain in the forecast so there is at least 24 - 36 hours time after you treat before it rains.  Termidor SC is made to bond to the soil but it needs time to "set" and bond to hold up against a rain event.

    Q
When can you plant edible plants in a treated area with Termidor SC?
We had an exterminator do a treatment on our house in the late spring of 2013. Unfortunately, the only place for a decent garden is along the side of the house. When is it ok to plant veggies and fruit? And what is a safe distance away from a treated area?
    A
You should not plant anything edible in the same soil that was treated with Termidor SC. Termidor SC persists in soil for at least 10 years and it is not labeled to be used in places where edible plants will be grown. If you really do want to plant a vegetable garden in an area that was treated with Termidor SC, you will need to remove all of the soil and replace it with untreated soil. You should note though that if the soil is removed and it is in the termite treatment barrier zone you will be left with a hole in your termite barrier. You should keep Termidor treatments at least 10 feet away from any garden. You must keep any edible garden plants far enough away from the soil so that the roots do not enter that area. Please contact the manufacturer BASF for further instruction 800-526-1072.

I broke the concrete floor out of basement to pour a new one in. Now that it is out, can I spray the dirt floor before I pour a new one?
    A
Termidor SC should be applied in a 6" by 6" trench directly around the exterior of your home. It is not labeled for indoor use.

    Q
What would be the best product and approach to use for an ongoing ant problem?
We are in Florida for the winter months. We arrived back early Dec this year and have had a continuous ant problem every since. I have never seen anything like this before and I've been coming down for 10 yrs. The ants are in every single area of the house, on the table, counter tops, bathroom counter etc...lots of ants. I even had pest control come in and spray once, but didn't seem to help at all so gave up on that. I'm leaving to go back to Wi soon and am wondering if I leave enough of the right poison out, if maybe it will help while I'm gone. Any suggestions? Thanks
    A
Termidor SC would work fantastic to put a barrier up outdoors.
Termidor is the # 1 choice for ant control around the home. Termidor is a non-repellent insecticide that works with a delayed reaction amd also has a transfer effect. That means that ants cannot tell that the Termidor is there and will walk right over it and then pick the product up on their bodies and inadvertently carry it back to the colony, then through normal social interaction the ants spread the Termidor and wipe out the colony. Termidor only needs to be applied two times per year and is effective for a wide variety of insects including ants, centipedes, roaches, spiders, silverfish, wasps and many other nuisance insects. You will need to apply Termidor SC 1-2 ft up the foundation and 1-2 ft out onto the ground, around door frames, window frames, places where cables, pipes or wires go through the wall and any other crack or crevice where the ants can gain entry into your home. Indoors you can use Phantom to treat cracks and crevices.

    Q
I was hoping to get some facts on pesticides being used at my home & the safety for small children and fetuses.
I recently read an article suggesting a link between pesticides and autism. The evidence was weak, but I was hoping to get some facts on pesticides being used at my home and the safety for small children and fetuses. The pesticides used are Delta Dust, Cy-Kick CS, Mother Earth Granular scatter bait, and Termidor SC. We are never present during application. Are these safe for home use around children/pregnant women?
    A

We understand your concerns and are happy to address them. Delta Dust is placed inside the wall voids so this is inaccessible to children and adults as well. Cy-Kick CS is safe once it is dry. Children should be kept out of the area that MotherEarth Granular Scatter Bait  is placed until the application is complete. Termidor SC should only be used outdoors unless there is an active termite infestation indoors and you are applying it directly to the infested area. This is another product that children should be kept out of the area while it is being applied.

These products are safe to use around your home if they are being used correctly. We recommend always following the labels on products and taking the necessary precautions.

    Q
Will Termidor SC kill fire ants?
    A
Termidor SC is not a good option for fire ant control because it can only be used on or immediately adjacent to a structure, it is not labeled to be used out in the yard.  We recommend using a fire ant bait granule such as Advion Fire Ant Granules or Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Granules. Both of these are labeled specifically for fire ants and can be used out in the yard as a broadcast or mound treatment.

    Q
Does Termidor SC also kill southern chinch bugs?
I am looking for something very effective against ants and chinch bugs.
    A
Termidor SC is not labeled for chinch bugs and cannot be used in a yard where this pest is found.

Bifen IT is one of our most popular products for Chinch Bug Control. The key is to use lots of water to carry the Bifen IT down to the thatch layer underneath the grass, where the chinch bugs do the most damage. Please read the product label for proper application instructions.

    Q
We see carpenter ants still appearing after two weeks after Termidor and now they are inside.
We found carpenter ants digging in our second story deck. We called a pest control company that sprayed Termidor around the perimeter of our house and all over the second story deck. The skies opened and drenched everything about an hour later. The ants disappeared within a day or two. Two weeks later we are seeing ants inside our sunroom (we did not have them there before. The sunroom is built on stilts with a lattice base. The pest control company sprayed the base of the lattice but not the foundation poles or under the sunroom (which includes the actual foundation for the house). We purchased Maxforce gel bait and Advance bait and plan on putting them out once they arrive. Will the Termidor on the deck last? I've thrown several ants onto the deck? What else can I do? I really thought the Termidor would take care of everything. Should we also be spraying our lawn? I've seen winged ants outside near our house.
    A

Termidor SC is a great exterior product for ants including carpenter ants. It will last for six months as a topical outdoor application but can take some time to fully eradicate as the ants carry it and transfer to other colony members. You will be able to get rid of Carpenter Ants more effectively if you can locate where they are coming from. They are the most active at night between 10AM-4AM. We do recommend treating with the Maxforce FC Carpenter Ant Bait and the Advance Carpenter Ant Bait. These baits will be extremely effective. The granules should be applied when dry outside and you are not expecting any rainfall within 24 hours of application. The bait gel can be applied directly to indoor cracks and crevices once every two weeks.

    Q
Will Termidor SC kill chinch bugs in my lawn?
I have used this product to kill fire ants, and it works really good. I have a problem every year with chinch bugs in my lawn and am looking for a product to kill them.
    A
Termidor SC is not labeled to be used in your lawn. We would recommend using a granular product, such as Talstar granules. Chinch bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Irrigate the treated area with up to 0.25 inches of water immediately after application to activate (release from the granule) the insecticide. Chinch bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher applications rates will be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the summer. It may also be necessary to remove the thatch layer if it exceeds 1 inch in thickness to allow the Talstar to penetrate down to the soil. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

  • Asked by Jon from Stanton, Ca

    Q
If my house is all slab, with very little dirt around it, how do I create trenches?
Is there any recommended spray on products or are those not effective since termites do not appear on surfaces?
    A

Since termites do not usually come within 2-3 inches of the top soil, spraying the top surface of the ground with a termicide such as Termidor SC will not have any effect on Subterranean Termites. Doing a barrier soil treatment around the perimeter of home with Termidor SC will give you a 10 year barrier protection against termites. In the areas where there is dirt, dig a 6x6 inch trench pouring 4 gallons of mixed solution every 10 lineal feet (.8 fl oz per gallon of water) For your garage, porch, patios, or other contiguous slabs against the home where you cannot trench, you will drill holes to ensure the termiticide reaches the soil underneath the concrete. Using a hammer drill with a 1/2" x 18" drill bit,  drill holes through the concrete about 2 to 3 inches away from the wall or foundation, and about every 10"-12" apart, only on the seam where the concrete is against the foundation. The deeper the better. Once the holes are drilled, you fill at the same rate you did the trench, 4 gallons per 10 feet.  This works out to be a little less than half a gallon per hole. It is difficult to get 4 gallons per 10 feet in the holes, so it is important that you use a long drill bit, at least 18" long so you can bore out enough dirt to hold the termiticide. Sometimes the ground is slow to soak up the termiticide you place in the holes.  You may need to fill the holes, then go work on something else for an hour, come back and fill them again, go work on something else.....3 to 4 times to get the proper amount down the holes. Once the holes are filled all you need to do is patch them with a concrete patch filler you can buy at Home Depot or you can use our Trebor plugs that will close the hole with no concrete mess.

Please take a look at our "How to do a Termite Treatment" Article for further information.

    Q
When treating my home for termites, do I need to inject the Termidor in the basement floor around all the wall?
I had a pest control company treat my home years ago, and they did this. I can see where all the holes are and have the means to do it.
    A
Yes, you can apply Termidor SC to drilled holes in your basement. The only permissible ways Termidor SC can be used indoors is when it is applied to drilled holes or wall voids where there is an active termite infestion. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
