Set the trigger as light as possible

The plastic trigger is the best. I don't use bait. Set the trigger metal arm so it just barely catches the plastic trigger. The plastic trigger if done right will be laying down almost flat.

We've had better luck with the old fashioned metal bait pad than the new plastic ones. Fewer traps cleaned out without snapping. Hit rate with these is ~85% vs. ~50% for the plastic
