About Non-Selective Post-Emergent Herbicides

Using these products will help to kill existing annual and perennial weeds, but won’t prevent new weeds from growing. A non-selective herbicide does not differentiate between desirable plants and weeds, and will kill any plant it comes in contact with, unless otherwise noted. This means you must take great care when using this type of herbicide, making sure to carefully choose which areas to control weeds.

You will find many post-emergent non-selective herbicides on the market. Many are sold as liquids, but granular formulas are available. Often, glyphosate will be the main active ingredient, which is what the product Roundup contains.

Using Non-Selective Post-Emergent Herbicides

The most important thing to keep in mind when using a non-selective herbicide is to apply it very carefully to avoid getting the product in contact with desired plants like your lawn or landscape ornamentals. A mixed landscape makes it a bit more difficult to apply this product, but with the right tools and techniques, you should be able to use this type of herbicide to get your desired results. Here are some tips to keep in mind before you use a post-emergent nonselective herbicide:

  • This type of herbicide doesn’t rely on the important seasonal timing that a preemergent herbicide does, so you can apply this product whenever you need to control weeds.
  • Use this type of product as spot treatments in your yard directly on weeds that may have been missed by a pre-emergent herbicide application or you have a few weeds here and there. Wet leaves of weeds thoroughly but try not to totally drench the plants with application.
  • Apply to cracks in sidewalks or driveways to kill any vegetation that may grow there, or in areas of your landscape where any plant or weed is undesirable.
  • If you have a lot of weeds mixed in throughout your garden bed, lawn, or landscape plants, consider using a selective herbicide to control these weeds to better protect your desirable plants.
