The ScareCrow motion sensor sprinkler is a very effective option that does not use chemicals or ugly netting. Using just 2-3 cups of water per burst the ScareCrow motion detector sprinkler animal deterrent startles animals and scares them away. Working for as long as six months on just one, nine-volt battery the ScareCrow motion activated sprinkler protects up to 1,200 sq. ft. day and night. If you need to cover a larger area you can link several scarecrows together.

Yes, you can adjust the sensitivity with the simple twist of a knob.
Can I hook the ScareCrow up to my in-ground irrigation system?
No, the ScareCrow needs line pressure at all times. An irrigation system pipeline only pressurizes when the system is sprinkling your lawn. You can however, set up a separate in-ground irrigation feed system to your ScareCrow that is on all the time. As PVC pipe is not as flexible as a garden hose and therefore less able to absorb the pressure flux of a ScareCrow activation, Contech recommends installing a hammer arrester at the point where the ScareCrow is affixed to the in ground plumbing.
Can I switch the ScareCrow off?
Yes. There are two ways to switch off the ScareCrow: either set the sensitivity knob to zero, or shut off the water supply. Please note that if you shut the water off, the unit will still sense and activate, but will not spray water. For a heavy traffic area, turning the sensitivity knob to zero is the best option.
Can the ScareCrow be used in the winter?
No. Bring it in when there is risk of freezing. Freezing water may damage the valve in the ScareCrow.
Does the ScareCrow work at night?
Yes. The ScareCrow works during the day and at night because it uses an infrared sensor.
How long will the ScareCrow operate before needing a new battery?
Results vary from a few weeks to a year depending upon how often people, pets or the wind trigger the unit. The average is between four and six months. The ScareCrow will typically fire approximately 3000 times from a single battery.
How much water pressure is needed?
30 to 80 P.S.I. If your water pressure is greater than 80 P.S.I., Contech recommends installing a pressure reducer (available at hardware and irrigation supply stores) at the hose bib.
I'm not sure I like the look of the ScareCrow. Can I get it in plain black?
Yes, the ScareCrow is delivered with the decals packaged separately – you may choose to apply the 'beak and eyes' design, or leave them off.

Read Full Answer »Here are the instructions for setting up the ScareCrow sprinkler: First, turn the sensitivity knob to 4 or 5. Next, wave your hand in front of the sensor lens. You should easily hear the ScareCrow’s internal water valve click open, then click closed 3 seconds later. There is an 8 second reset interval after the valve closes when the sensor does not detect motion. Assemble stake and attach sprinkler head and stake to housing. Connect hose and position the ScareCrow. Aim the ScareCrow towards the area you want to protect. Push the spike into the ground by stepping on the footrest. Do not push on the sensor housing or sprinkler head. If the ground is too hard or otherwise unsuitable for the plastic stake, try placing the ScareCrow in a flower pot filled with a weighted material like sand or grave. Set the sensitivity knob high enough to see to target animal when it is within reach of the 10 meter (35 foot) water spray, but not beyond that point. It is not beneficial to sense animals or moving objects outside the area you wish to protect. Start outside your desired coverage area and work your way inwards. The ScareCrow’s sprinkler will activate once it detects you. Make minor adjustments until you feel the ScareCrow will only trigger when movement is detected inside the you wish to protect. After the 3 second pulse of water, remain still for approximately 8 seconds after each activation, while the ScareCrow resets itself. Repeat this process until you have a good idea of the ScareCrow’s area of coverage at this setting. After you have set the ScareCrow’s sensitivity and positioned it securely with its lens aimed at the desired area, use this section to help you adjust the arc and distance of the ScareCrow’s water spray. Make sure the water is turned OFF, then follow the steps below. Position the stem tabs so the metal wire clip travels between these tabs and faces the area to be sprayed. Stem tabs determine the arc range of the ScareCrow from 0 to 300 degrees. Raise or lower the water deflector dial to control the distance of the water spray. The ScareCrow should activate.
