    Q
My grass is grown from seed - what other comparable product might I use to control fleas?
    A
Most insecticides will not interrupt the growth of grass so anything that is labeled for flea control should be just fine to use. Most insecticides do have a disclaimer not to use on grass grown for seed (not to be mistaken as grass grown from seed). Talstar PL would be a great choice.

    Q
I live in Ma. and recently on my hemlock I found woolly adelgid. How to get rid of them?
    A
Talstar PL granules will not help with a wooly adelgid infestation. We recommend using a product that works systemically and contains the active ingredient imidalcoprid such as Dominion 2L. When using Dominion 2L as a soil drench for Hemlock Woolly Adelgids you should use 0.2 fl. oz. (3 to 6 mL) of Dominion 2L per inch of trunk diameter (D.B.H.) diluted in 1 pint - 1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter.    The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per inch of trunk diameter but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested.  Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at east 1/2 inch of water. Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and trans-located throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 7-10 days after applications to encourage uptake.

    Q
Is Talstar PL effective for white grubs?
    A

Talstar PL granules are not labeled for grubs. We carry three granule products that are labeled for grubs, Dylox 6.2, Merit Granules and Demand G. Dylox 6.2 is known to be one of the fastest acting granule products for grub control. You may find our article on grub control helpful.

    Q
What is the pet safety when using Talstar PL Granules?
I understand that it is safe for our dog once watered in and the area has dried. However, what about when the lawn is wet again in the future? Can our dog only enter our yard when it is dry?
    A

As you mentioned, once the Talstar PL Granules have been watered in and have dried, it is safe for the pets to resume normal activity in the yard. Ideally, you want 6 hours after it has dried before any rain or irrigation occurs to allow the product plenty of time to stick in its place in the lawn. After that point any watering, rain or other form of irrigation will not “re-activate” the granules to make it unsafe for the pet. They can safely walk across the lawn with dew or rain after that time frame.

    Q
Can Talstar PL Granules be used in the month of August
I live in Houston, Texas and the weather here is currently humid and 98, 99, 100 degrees. So..it's very hot and humid.
    A
Yes, Talstar granules can be used in high temps. You should wait to apply the product until evening as it will need to be watered in. If you water the granules during the heat of the day you risk the sun scorhing your lawn.

  • Asked by Anna from Phoenix Az
    10/23/2013
    Q
Will Talstar PL Granules kill bird & rat mites in yard?
    A
Talstar PL Granules is not labeled to treat for mites. We first want to make sure the mites have been positively identified as rat and bird mites. You can contact your Local Extension Office and speak with the Entemologist on staff. If so, then we would recommend Onslaught Insecticide. Onslaught produces no odor, is easy to use, and can be used both indoors and outdoors, including in food handling areas (please read directions carefully when using in sensitive environments). Onslaught Liquid Insecticide is micro-encapsulated, meaning that after the product is sprayed, the active ingredient is released slowly over time, producing long-lasting residual control of insect pests.

Will the Talstar PL Granules kill Crayfish?
My yard is full of Crayfish mounds. They are really bad when it rains.
    A

Crayfish are a vital food for both fish and animals. Unfortunately, the Talstar PL Granules is not labeled for Crayfish.  We suggest you use a repellent, and/or crayfish traps. The Tomahawk double door crayfish live trap - Model 405 is  designed specifically for trapping crayfish.

  • Asked by Paul
    03/17/2011
    Q
Would Talstar PL Granules be any help of ridding my yard of a type of beetle, common name of "Devil's Coach Horse"?
They are about 1 1/2 inches long and they do fly and bite. They raise their tail section as a defense.
    A
The Devils Coach Horse Beetle only has a very short range in the US and they are known to be a mainly beneficial insect so you will not be able to find an insecticide that is labeled for them. Talstar PL Granules are labeled for the really hard to kill insects such as scorpions and centipedes so it may work for the Devils Coach Horse beetle.

  • Asked by Ryan from New Orleans, La
    09/29/2014
    Q
Can the Talstar PL Granules be spread underneath a deck?
I have a deck that is only about 6 inches off the ground and it's underneath a patio cover. The result is that is stays damp underneath the deck. Can I broadcast this over the deck and sweep it between the cracks to help control mosquitoes? I know it won't be perfect uniform coverage, but something is better than nothing, right? If you have any other suggestions on a product or how to control the mosquitoes under the deck, I'm open to sugestions.
    A
To concentrate on the area under the decking, using Talstar P which is the liquid form of Talstar PL Granules. This would provide a better and more thorough application under the deck. This depends on the size of the gap between the decking boards as well. Using a hand pump sprayer, mix 1oz of Talstar per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft area. For mosquito control, you want to spray the perimeter of the home 3ft up and 3ft out from the side of the structure focusing on any damp areas and the underside of bushes, leaves and trees around the home (where mosquitos breed and harbor) We recommend keeping the applications of Talstar PL Granules to broadcasting over the lawn. If there is standing water in gutters, troughs, bird baths around the house, using the BTI Mosquito Dunks are a great option as well.

  • Asked by Juan
    08/23/2010
    Q
I have dogs, cats and frogs. What can I use for the frogs?
    A

There are no toxic products labeled for frogs or toads (or reptiles for that matter), and given the highly beneficial nature of these amphibians there is not likely to be anything coming along. The reasons they are on your property are because they can find food and proper habitat, and these are probably your only means for making them go away. Take away their food and they will forage somewhere else. Take away the conditions they need for hiding all day and they will seek refuge someplace else.

Habitat modification may be the more effective way to limit frogs on your property. Frogs are mainly nocturnal, and they seek food at night when it is cooler and damper. During the day they look for cool, damp, dark places to hide. They will hide under dense shrubbery or ground covers, under logs or lumber on the soil, or under large landscape rocks and timbers to avoid the hot, dry sun. Trim shrubbery, remove thick ground-cover, stack lumber or firewood off of the soil a few inches and remove any other objects or debris that come in contact with the soil and can provide harborage. Limit watering to help eliminate moisture from your yard.  You can also reduce the amount of insects (the frogs food source) in your yard by treating the grass with a residual insecticide such as Talstar PL.

    Q
Does Talstar PL Granules kill chiggers?
We found out the hard way that we have chiggers in an area of our yard we would like to use more. Will this kill them?
    A

Talstar PL Granules are not labeled to control chiggers. Talstar P and Onslaught<span new="" roman;="" font-size:medium"=""> are top-notch professional products and both are labeled for chiggers. Onslaught is micro-encapsulated and will last a little longer on outdoor surfaces which does give it a bit of advantage over Talstar P. Treatments for chiggers should begin in May and could need to continue through the summer as new chiggers move into the area. Treating the entire lawn is of little benefit because chiggers avoid direct sunlight and normally will not infest areas that are mowed or otherwise well maintained. Focus treatment on the unkempt areas of the lawn and lawn edge. You can also use Onslaught to do a barrier treatment around the outside of your home and in your crawl space to stop pests from moving indoors.

    Q
    Earthway C22HD settings
I have the Earthway C22HD spreader (which you sell) I read the Talstar info sheet and they did not list the setting for my spreader. Is there a cross reference chart?
    A
Yes, we would recommend looking at the product label for the Earthway C22HD. Talstar PL granules are fine (the size of sand) so the spread width is 5-7 feet. You will need to test the spread width of the product in the spreader and then the setting rate can be established.
