Talstar P Professional Insecticide - Questions & Answers

Talstar is not known to have ANY odor as this is one of the positive features of the product. Unless you used it stronger than the label suggest you should experience no smell. Talstar is a non-irritating product and it is safe for children and pets to be around after the treated area has dried. However, Talstar is NOT labeled for use in pastures containing grazing animals.

Yes, you can use a product called Talstar P to treat Springtails. Both Talstar and Termidor are non repellents and will not counter act each other.

The Dominion and Talstar can be applied back to back however we feel an application of Dylox and Talstar would be more appropriate. Dylox works well if you arecurrently seeing turf damage (this usually occurs from July-September depending on the type of grubs you have).  Arena Granules, Merit Granules or Dominion 2L will work well as a preventative if applied prior to egg hatch. You should check with your local cooperative extension office and speak to the master gardener on staff to establish the best time to put down a preventative treatment in your region. Either product you chose, you would apply either the Dominon or Dylox first, and then once dried, apply the talstar as it would control the chinch bugs and other insects and would help "water in" the dominion and dylox. One of the best products to use for mosquito and fly control would be the Talstar P. Its a great general use insecticide that is safe for plants, trees, lawns and even indoor use, and has no odor and leaves behind no stain or visible residue. It will hold up to the outdoor elements for at least 30 days and in some areas you could get up to 60 days control from each spray. You would mix Talstar at the rate of 1 ounce per gallon of water. You can spray the talstar with something like a Chapin 1 Gallon Pump Sprayer, or if you have a larger area to spray you could use a backpack sprayer like the Chapin ProSeries 4 gallon sprayer. For added control over the mosquitoes, flies and other bugs in your area, you could mix in NyGuard IGR to the same gallon of water mixture with the Talstar. The NyGuard is birth control for the insects to help keep them from reproducing faster than you can kill them. While the Talstar will only last about 30-60 days, the NyGuard is actually formulated to hold up to sunlight for up to 5 months so you may only need to spray it once or twice per season. Phantom is a non-repellent insecticide that also has a transfer effect and is especially useful for insects that are social or extra sensitive like ants, roaches or bedbugs. Talstar P on the other hand will have a faster knockdown rate and is a bit more versatile as it can be used in more areas and for a wider variety of insects, but it will only kill the roaches that contact the treated area, whereas the Phatom will help to kill the entire colony, as does the MaxForce FC Magnum.  Please be aware this does take time, it can take weeks or months to completely eliminate a roach infestation.  The NyGuard is only birth control to keep the roaches from reproducing and side effects of that are the crinkled look.  For more helpful hints on eliminating your infestation, take a look at our guide on How To Get Rid Of Roaches.

Talstar P can be used at the maximum usage rate of 1 fl oz of Talstar P per gallon of water for tick elimination. This product cannot be used in edible food gardens.

We recommend you use Talstar P. Talstar P should be applied every 30 days at the 1fl oz per gallon of water usage rate from August through to the first frost. If you need to spray high areas you may need to use something like the Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer 6002. This sprayer is much different than most sprayers but there is a video located on the page we have linked for you that will show you how to use the sprayer.

Termidor or Talstar P cannot be used in the manner you have described and neither are labeled for use on. Termites do not normally attack live, healthy trees so you most likely will not find any products that will work as a ground barrier around the trees.  Most people are primarily concerned with protecting the big investment, their home, and Termidor would be the product to use for that.  It is only labeled to be used adjacent to the structure though.  Please take a moment to read over our article on "How to do a Termite Treatment" for complete details.

Talstar P can be used to help control cluster flies and lady bugs indoors and outdoors. If the cluster flies have already made their way indoors, they will be harder to control because they usually hide in a wall void or other inaccessible area and are only visible when the house warms up. If the cluster flies are in an attic or drop ceiling or other dark area, a fly light would do a great job controlling the population. Using small fly lights such as the Fly Web in the house would also help to catch the flies. Spray Talstar P directly on baseboards, window frames, door frames, and places where utilities (pipes, wires, cables) enter in to the building and any other crack, crevice or gap where insects can enter.

Talstar P would be a good choice for grasshopper control. You should start applications before the grasshoppers have a chance to hatch for best control. You should thoroughly spray your lawn and water in the application with about a .25 in of water to help the product get past the thatch layer and into the soil where grass hoppers actually develop. If you already have grasshoppers you can use Talstar P at the highest usage rate of 1 oz of product per 1 gallon of water for the quickest knockdown. Use sufficient amounts of water to help the product get to the soil layers. Once the Talstar has dried it will be completely safe for the cats to resume their normal activity in the areas that have been treated. 

Talstar P is a popular choice for tent caterpillars aka army worms.  Directly spray the plant foliage and nest. The larvae are usually easy to contact if spraying is done in late morning when the larvae congregate on the tent surface to warm in the sun. Mechanical control is also helpful with this pest. The egg masses are easy to spot after the leaves have dropped in the fall. Simply clip off and crush or drop into a bucket of soapy water.

Talstar will kill spiders and other insects that they feed on, however it can not be sprayed around piers or bodies of water that fish inhabit. Instead we recommend Talstar's all natural equivalent that is highly used around piers, docks and water areas for spider control. It's a concentrate called Essentria IC3 and can be used for a variety of pests.

Talstar P is to be mixed and sprayed when needed. You do not want to store the mixed solution longer than 24 hours. The product will lose its efficacy and it could damage your application equipment. Please discard any remaining product left unused and rinse the sprayer, nozzle and wand.

Termidor SC is a non-repellent insecticide. This means that ants and other insects cannot tell that it is there and they will readily walk over treated areas. Termidor SC also has a delayed reaction time and a transfer effect which allows the ants time to get back to the colony and spread it around before they succumb to the effects of the product. Talstar P on the other hand is synthetic pyrethroid which many sensitive insects such as ants can detect. Ants may avoid the areas treated with Talstar and those ants that do cross over treated areas are the only ones that will be killed by the product. Talstar P does not have a transfer effect so it will not be transferred back to the colony. While the Termidor SC will not actually be deactivated by Talstar P, it will be much less effective if it is over-sprayed with Talstar P. 

You can spray the Talstar P higher up around window frames, window sills, door frames,  any cracks and crevices around foundation or where caulking around windows and doors has opened up, around vents leading inside, and around lights (these bugs are attracted to the light from windows, doors, etc).

Millipedes are usually going to be present when there is a lot of moisture in the area. If you have a lot of mulch near your house you may want to consider raking it back at least six inches away from the house. Also trimming bushes so that you can see the soil beneath them and so they do not touch the house will help reduce soil moisture and stop the insects from gaining access to the house via the bushes.  Talstar P would be a great choice for this pest.  You would apply around the outside perimeter of the home (especially under and around eaves, decks, patios, and window shutters), and inside along baseboards, in cracks and crevices, and other potential millipede harborages. We are not familiar with that misting system. Talstar is a great product to use in a misting sprayer. Riptide and Pyrahna are still top choices for misting systems.
