    Merit

    By Bill on 09/14/2010

Excellent systemic saved my avocado tree from thrips, my ficus hedge from whitefly and my lawn from grub worms. Somewhat effective on the lime tree for leaf miners. Merit can be used on everything around your home, and even as a foundation soak for subterranean termites.

    Locust Borers

    By Chris on 08/30/2018

    Verified Purchase

I have several older Large purple robes that are infested with locust borers. The local "pros" told me to cut them down and chip/burn them; they could not be saved. We planted these trees 15 years ago when we bought the property and I was not about to give up on them that easily. I did a foliar treatment to kill the emerging adults with Cyper and did a drench treatment and repeat treatment a few weeks after to make sure I got the Merit into the roots. A year later 2 of my 3 trees are thriving. The winds did break one of the weakend trees but the other two are going strong, healing over their wounds and so far no sign of new borers.

    Elm Beetle drench

    By Gerard on 02/02/2018

I worked out the amounts I needed per tree, weighing the doses seemed the most effective. Did all 14 of my Chinese Elms, we will see how effective my process was this summer when the beetles hit. The internal packaging was damaged on a couple of packets within the main package. Compared to some of the liquid alternatives, this powder seems to be the most cost efficient method of addressing my beetle protection. It was less than 1/3 of the cost I was quoted by a commercial exterminator or buying the liquid version from Home Depot.

    Easy to Use product

    By Jon on 03/11/2022

Toss a packet in some water, stir it up when the packet dissolves and apply as directed. Give some time for the plants to translocate it and your specific pests disappear.

Q
How much water do I need to dilute one packet of Merit 75 WSP in for a lawn application?

I want to purchase Merit to treat for grubs, I am having a hard time understanding mixing instructions. It says one packet per 8250 sq.ft but How are we to measure or know how much water to mix etc.. If someone could clear that up it would be great. Thanks

A
The amount of water you use is up to you. The manufacturer recommends that you use an amount of water that is easy for you to handle and calculate. Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. It is recommended that you use at least 5-10 gallons of water per 1,000 sq ft. After the application is complete you can then go back and irrigate the area to help the product penetrate the root systems.

Q
Does Merit kill bees

When used as root injection

A
Merit 75 WSP is highly toxic to bees even if applied as a root injection. The residue can still be there when the tree or shrub blooms.

Q
Is Merit 75 WSP safe to use as a soil drench for Citrus?

Can I use this on Citrus for psyllid control? Should I harvest fruit first? How long will this persist in the plant?

A
Merit 75 WSP cannot be used on a citrus tree. The product can persist for about 1 year after the application inside the tree. There is another product called Imidapro 4SC which is labeled for use on citrus trees and it contains the same active ingredient as Merit just in a different formulation.

Q
I have white fly infestation on my golden duranta hedges in Honolulu where it's hot and humid year round.

I was told Merit was the best systemic insecticide to use. Are there any other similar products that you would recommend?

A
Merit works well because it contains the active ingredient imidacloprid which acts as a systemic insecticide, but as you probably know is also quite expensive. We do carry several other products that contain imidacloprid and will work in the same way as Merit, and they are less expensive. Adonis 75 WSP, Adonis 2F, Dominion 2L, Criterion 75 WSP, Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic, and Bonide Systemic Granules. Each of these products will work systemically to help treat for whitefly, but the application and usage rate will vary so you should read the product label of the product you are considering and make sure you are comfortable with the application before purchasing. Systemic products can take several weeks to translocate through a plant. During that time the whiteflies can cause a lot of damage so you should use a product such as Talstar P as a foliage spray to help control the infestation while the systemic product is working its way through the plants.

Q
Will Merit 75 WSP help to get rid of moles?
A

Merit 75 WSP will treat grubs and other turf pests that moles may occasionally eat, however, we would not recommend insect control as the primary means of treating for moles. Moles' primary food source is earthworms, which are going to be impossible (and unecessary) to eliminate. Our most popular treatment product for moles is Talpirid Mole Bait. Please see our Mole Treatment Guide for more details and tips.
