About Vegetation Management

Vegetation management is generally a way to control interfering plants to improve visibility, functionality, drainage, and safety functions of roadways, public paths or trails, and other areas of transportation, like railroads and airports. Many times cities and municipalities have their own vegetation management units in charge of designated areas. While vegetation management can be done mechanically, herbicides are a preferred solution since they can help control the whole plant, prevent re-growth, reduce need for ground disruption and cutting, and can be safe for both people and the environment.

How to Use Vegetation Management Products

You will need to follow the instructions and safety warnings on the label of each product carefully. There are many types of products to choose from, each with a different and specific function, and many reasons to use them. Here is a brief look at what type of product is available and when and where they can be used to get rid of weeds and other unwanted plants.

  • To begin, you must assess the species present in the area you want to treat, and identify the stage of development, terrain features, and eventual vegetation management goals. Goals can include total bare ground, just grass cover, or clover cover.
  • Safety problems can arise from unruly or out of control plants. They can hide signs, reduce visibility, reduce shoulders on roadways, inhibit drainage, create a fire hazard, and contribute to erosion.
  • Some plants can grow tall enough to disrupt power supplies.
  • Noxious weeds, or invasive and dangerous weeds, must be controlled to maintain the health of native plant species.
  • These products will also help to maintain grasses but control unwanted plants and prevent re-growth.
  • We carry products that will kill all plant life in the soil, often called soil sterilization. These products will prevent plants from growing after application, so your soil will remain plant-free for a certain period of time.
  • Products that target specific plants but leave others in-tact are helpful in controlling anything from woody plants like blackberry bushes, or annual and perennial broadleaf weeds.
  • Most of these products cannot be used in croplands.
